Make your home a happy place

Our homes express who we are. What we do within the walls of our home can shape our mood, affect our productivity and influence our outlook on life. Here are a few simple things you can do to make your home a happier place for everyone!

Bring every room back to “ready”

Making your bed is a simple three-minute task that can instantly make your bedroom look like a calming sanctuary. I think we can all agree that crumpled-up sheets and covers is not a relaxing sight to come home to – especially after a long day’s work! Likewise, organising the pillows in your lounge and folding the blanket can change the whole mood of your room.

Decorate with what you love

Furnishing your house with items you love and will never tire of is the key to personalising YOUR home. Sure enough, if you love something, you will make sure you find a home for it in your house. Some of these things could include sentimental pieces that remind you of experiences such as photographs or memorabilia you have collected from overseas holidays. Make your home a gallery of positive memories!

Remember the power of white paint

Do you have a dark and unloved room? Why not get yourself a large tin of plain old white paint and spend a day whitewashing your walls? Fresh white walls reflect light and will instantly send off positive energy within your house.

Choose furniture with curves

Using furniture with round shapes can instantly soften the appearance of a room and make it much more ‘homely’. Whether it is a round coffee table, an armchair with curved armrests or a round lampshade, you will be shocked at the difference this can make in a room.

Create beauty by contrast

Through the careful placement of fine materials, you can create character and keep the room feeling interesting and attractive. This can be done particularly well in the kitchen by incorporating a retro piece, such as wooden kitchen stools, against a modern stone bench top. Do not limit yourself to the kitchen – you can do this in any room of your house, just think outside the box!

Do small favours around your home

Why not take that one step further and do something unexpected for your housemate or family member? Take the rubbish out for your roommate, make the bed for your partner, water the garden for your mum or take the dog for a walk. Simple steps like these can strengthen relationships, cultivate the environment within the home and make it a happy place for everyone!

Create an experience at home

Your home is a sanctuary ideal for entertaining and socialising with friends. So why not invest money into things such as a BBQ, a swimming pool or a DVD and invite your friends over to kick back, relax and enjoy? Nothing beats spending time with close friends at YOUR own home!

Recreate your happy place

Last but not least; why not create a room in your house that reminds you of a place that made you happiest? This could be your number one holiday destination, your favourite room in your mum’s house or a dream bedroom you have stayed in. You can achieve this through something as little as painting the walls or adding an accessory to the room, or you may choose to go all out!
