Our 5 favourite interior design styles

When it comes to interior design styles, we’ve got you covered!

Most people tend to play it safe and think that good design is primarily about matching up colours and tones. But we’re encouraging you to think outside the box and express your unique personality throughout your home interior design.

Be inspired by places that you’ve been, styles that you’ve seen in either magazines or on TV and then try them out in your own home.

Below is a list of our five favourite distinctive interior design styles which have put together especially for you.

Contemporary

If you like to keep up with current styles and enjoy things that are modern, then contemporary interior style is for you! Contemporary interiors are comfortable and welcoming without being cluttered and dark. They are simple in their appearance and feature subtle sophistication, texture and clean lines. Less is more. In contemporary style interiors think basic, bold and structural.

  • Colour: Full-colour spectrum
  • Walls: Basic walls with feature artwork
  • Floor: Any flooring – carpet, wooden floor, concrete floor
  • Decor: Items made from wood, glass chrome and metal.

Industrial

Industrial interior style is about displacing the building materials that you may normally opt conceal in your home. It’s about adding a raw, unfinished look to a thoughtfully designed home.   Neutral tones, utilitarian objects, wood and metal objects are all central to industrial interiors.

Key elements:

  • Exposed brickwork
  • Steel structure
  • Concrete
  • Rough timbers
  • Pendant lights
  • Great storage
  • Clutter free

Minimalism

Minimalist interiors are defined by simplicity and ‘less is more’. Minimalist interiors are clutter-free and are reduced to only include necessary elements. In order to achieve this look in your home, consider clean lines that bring texture into the space and select a few materials to use throughout your home.

  • Colour: White, beige, grey
  • Walls: White with minimal artwork
  • Floor: Hard finishes such as floorboards, polished concrete or large stone tiles.
  • Decor: Feature furniture pieces and contemporary objects.

Nautical

You do not need to live next to the ocean to create this interior design style! Nautical interiors are a growing trend and gives you a ‘get away from it all’ feeling. This design captures impressions of the sea, boats, sand and travel. You can also look to the Hamptons to help you create a nautical interior design.

  • Colour: Antique white, deep aqua, navy, pale shades of blue and white washed timber
  • Walls: Timber cladding and flat-painted walls
  • Floor: White-washed painted floorboards or mid-toned timber floorboard with neutral rugs
  • Décor: Reclaimed wood and decorative items such as anchors, rope, oars, stones, shells etc.

Rustic

Rustic home interior design brings the outdoors in. The key influence in this style is nature in which organic materials such as wood add warmth and create a cozy feeling in the home. However, be careful not to overdo it as you don’t want you home to resemble a farmhouse. You want to build your rustic interior design in a subtle way so your home is a feel good environment with a mixed style.

  • Colour: Neutral earthy tones such as tan, brown, slate, cream, grey and green
  • Walls: Add texture to your walls using paint, wallpaper or reclaimed wood
  • Floors: Wooden floorboards, stone and woven rugs
  • Decor: Wooden objects and metal furniture.
