While a building permit from the council is still required for safety, this now takes a maximum of 10 business days.
The move is expected to invigorate the granny flat market, already in high demand due to the housing crisis. Planning Minister John Carey emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing the shortage by eliminating unnecessary red tape. The reform allows any property, regardless of size, to be considered for a granny flat, providing a flexible and affordable housing option.
